Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT)[edit]

The Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a leading research institution in Italy, dedicated to advancing technology and innovation. It plays a pivotal role in the development of cutting-edge robotics and other technological advancements.

iCub Crew[edit]

The iCub crew consists of international scientists and engineers with a passion for humanoid robotics. They have delivered one of the most remarkable robotics projects, driven by their dedication and enthusiasm.

Early Developments[edit]

Initially, the team designed the mechanics, electronics, firmware, and software infrastructure of the iCub. They subsequently implemented the first examples of motor control, including inverse kinematics and force control, as well as vision libraries, simple trackers, object recognition, attention systems, and central pattern generators (CPGs) for crawling. They also applied learning methods to dynamics.

Recently, the IIT team has consolidated their research along several key lines, including whole-body control (e.g., locomotion), vision and touch (both traditional and neuromorphic), grasping and manipulation, and speech and human-robot interaction. Their goal is to enhance iCub's interaction skills.

Development of R1[edit]

The same team that developed the iCub has also created the new R1 robot. The R1 uses almost the same electronics and software as the iCub but features brand-new mechanics.
