Figure 01 is a humanoid robot developed by Figure AI, a robotics company founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock.

The robot is designed to perform a variety of tasks across industries such as manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and retail. Standing at 1.6 meters tall and weighing 60 kilograms, Figure 01 is fully electric and boasts a runtime of approximately five hours on a single charge. It is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence systems, including integrations with OpenAI's models, enabling it to process and reason from language, as well as engage in real-time conversations with humans.

Development and Features

The development of Figure 01 progressed rapidly, with the company unveiling the prototype in October 2023, less than a year after its founding. The robot achieved dynamic walking capabilities shortly thereafter. In early 2024, Figure AI announced a partnership with OpenAI to enhance the robot's AI capabilities, allowing it to perform tasks such as making coffee by observing human actions and engaging in conversations.

Applications

Figure 01 is intended for deployment in various sectors to address labor shortages and perform tasks that are unsafe or undesirable for humans. In January 2024, Figure AI entered into an agreement with BMW to utilize the robot in automotive manufacturing facilities. Demonstrations have showcased Figure 01 performing tasks like assembling car parts and interacting with humans in real-time.

Limitations

Despite its advancements, Figure 01 has several limitations:

  • Task Complexity: The robot is currently capable of performing structured and repetitive tasks but may struggle with complex or unstructured environments that require advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Speed and Efficiency: Demonstrations have shown that Figure 01 operates at a slower pace compared to human workers, which could impact its efficiency in time-sensitive applications.
  • Physical Capabilities: While designed to mimic human dexterity, the robot's ability to handle delicate or intricate objects is still under development, limiting its applicability in tasks requiring fine motor skills.
  • Battery Life: With a runtime of approximately five hours, Figure 01 requires regular recharging, which could hinder continuous operation in certain industrial settings.
  • Environmental Adaptability: The robot's performance in varying environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures or uneven terrains, has not been extensively tested, potentially limiting its deployment in diverse settings.

These limitations highlight the ongoing challenges in developing general-purpose humanoid robots capable of seamlessly integrating into human-centric environments.
