Unveiled in August 2024, Figure 02 represents a significant advancement in humanoid robotics, combining human-like dexterity with advanced artificial intelligence to perform a wide range of tasks across various industries.[1]

Development and Features

Building upon its predecessor, Figure 01, the development of Figure 02 involved a comprehensive hardware and software redesign. Key features of Figure 02 include:

  • Speech-to-Speech Interaction: Equipped with onboard microphones and speakers, Figure 02 can engage in natural speech-to-speech conversations with humans, utilizing custom AI models developed in collaboration with OpenAI.[1]
  • Vision-Language Model (VLM): The robot incorporates an onboard VLM that enables rapid common-sense visual reasoning, allowing it to interpret and respond to visual inputs effectively.[1]
  • Enhanced Battery Capacity: A custom 2.25 kWh battery pack housed in the torso provides over 50% more energy compared to the previous generation, extending operational runtime.[1]
  • Integrated Wiring: The design features integrated cabling for power and communication, resulting in concealed wires, increased reliability, and a more streamlined appearance.[1]
  • Advanced Vision System: Six onboard RGB cameras power an AI-driven vision system, enabling the robot to perceive and understand its environment with high accuracy.[1]
  • Fourth-Generation Hands: The robot's hands are equipped with 16 degrees of freedom and human-equivalent strength, facilitating the execution of a wide range of human-like tasks.[1]
  • Increased Computational Power: With triple the computational and AI inference capabilities of its predecessor, Figure 02 can perform real-world AI tasks fully autonomously.[1]

Applications

Figure 02 is designed for deployment across various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and retail. In recent tests at BMW Manufacturing's facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the robot successfully performed AI data collection and use case training, demonstrating its potential to enhance productivity and efficiency in industrial settings.[1]

Limitations

Despite its advancements, Figure 02 has certain limitations:

  • Environmental Adaptability: The robot's performance in diverse and unstructured environments requires further validation to ensure reliability across various settings.
  • Task Complexity: While capable of performing a wide range of tasks, Figure 02 may encounter challenges with highly complex or nuanced activities that demand advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Battery Life: Although the battery capacity has been enhanced, the operational runtime may still be insufficient for continuous use in certain industrial applications without periodic recharging.
  • Physical Capabilities: The robot's ability to handle extremely delicate or intricate objects is still under development, which may limit its applicability in tasks requiring fine motor skills.

Addressing these limitations is essential for the broader adoption and integration of Figure 02 into various industries.
